Well, personally I'm guessing that if there's a way it would be related, if not a direct consequence, to finding a way to leave this place on will. Even if finding the way to leave at will would still cause a memory loss, it's possible we could bring data over with us in the form of documents which would allow me to work on that. I think the main reason why we forget upon returning is a defense mechanism, maybe from our minds or this world itself, to avoid altering timelines too greatly.
